About Din Tai Fung
Din Tai Fung Restaurant was established in the year 2000 by Yang Bingyi, he worked for more than ten years in the cooking oil industry in Taiwan.
Then he decided to open their own shop to support his family. In the year 1958, he and his wife started an oil for cooking store.
The store was named Din Tai Fung, by the combination of Yang’s (previous employer) and the new source (DinMei oils).
Around 1970, tinned cooking oil was popular and the business fell significantly. In the face of this, the owner at Din Tai Fung took the decision to transform part of the store to serve steam buns.
The business of selling buns was so popular that around 1972 they decided to stop selling oil and turned it into an actual restaurant.
The year 1996 was when they launched their first restaurant outside of Tokyo In 2000, they inaugurated the first North American store in Arcadia, California.
The first European branch was established in London in 2018. In the wake of COVID-19, there is a first North American Restaurant permanently closed on the 11th of June, 2020.
