Starbucks Flat White Review If you’re like me, a great coffee will always make your day more uplifting. This is the reason why I am a huge coffee fan and try to drink it daily. I also like to experiment with my coffee and when a cafe or coffee shop comes up with a unique take on coffee I am very excited about trying it.
In all honesty, I’ve only recently tested Starbucks’ Flat White espresso although it came out just a few years back and is becoming one of their main drinks.
How is a Flat White Made?
This type of coffee is a variation of the espresso but with the addition of steaming milk. It’s perfect for those who love cream in their drink, however, they also appreciate the punch of powerful coffee.
Flat whites are typically composed of two shots of espresso, paired with milk that’s been steam-cooked, and then the addition of a layer of microfoam to finish it off.
The process is the most crucial aspect of making a perfect flat white. The flavor and texture come due to it, and not due to the ground coffee beans, or even the form of milk.

Where it came from is a highly debated subject and is being debated, however, it is believed that the best locations are the land in the Outback (Australia) and the homeland of the Maori (New New Zealand).
The only thing that is up for debate is the fact that it was created in the 1980s, possibly in the early days. Later on, it spread to numerous countries including the US, and has been a popular drink in coffee shops that focus on special drinks.
Then, the people of the region switched from drinking regular coffee to espressos. They began looking for something distinct from the cappuccino. The latter included foamed milk which produced peak.
They wanted their coffee made “flat”, as in without the foamy appearance. After further experiments with the beverage, they considered placing an extra layer of microfoam on the top of the coffee to distinguish it from the Cappuccino.
In the past few years, Starbucks started serving flat whites to replace the latte drink, the most well-known espresso drink in the US and is now considered to be a part of popular culture.
The Difference Between Flat White and Latte
The primary thing that differentiates the latte from a plain white drink is the proportion of espresso to milk. The texture of milk is quite similar in both beverages, however, flat whites are more aerated and therefore are more smooth.
Flat whites tend to be offered in smaller cup sizes than lattes. Starbucks’ Flat White comes only in Tall and Tall, but you can also have coffee made in Grande as well as Venti.

How Does a Flat White Compare to a Latte?
For a stronger and more concentrated cup of coffee Flat White is a coffee with more concentration. Flat White has less milk and consequently is more pronounced in the coffee flavor. Since two shots of coffee are required to make Flat White, Flat White it also has more caffeine.

TASTE AND TEXTURE 5/5
The first thing to note is that you’ll be amazed at how the baristas in every Starbucks are fairly identical to the way the coffee is prepared. If it is made properly it’s a decent drink. It is very full of coffee flavor, and the microfoam in the milk makes it extremely smooth.

Starbucks’ Flat White contains 170 calories 9g of fat and 14g of carbs, and 9g of protein. All of that is derived from milk since the coffee itself does not have any nutritional value. However, it does contain 154mg of caffeine.
Since there’s less milk in the flat white than the latte, it contains lower calories. If you’re looking to lose some weight, but not willing to quit the milk every day changing from a latte to a plain white might be a better option.
IS IT WORTH IT? 4.5/5
An oversized Starbucks Latte is priced at $2.95 and an oversized Flat White is $3.75, which means it’s an extra 80 cents.
The most important aspect to take into consideration in addition to the price is because it takes a bit of expertise to create flat whites, they could differ from one Starbucks location to the next but as well from one barista to another.
Final Verdict
I’d say it’s a great drink, but due to the cost, I’ll not make it a regular drink. It’s a good idea to consider it if you’re looking to shake up your routine purchase.
